and an MA in Peace & Justice Studies from the University of San Diego. She focused her M.A. on refugees and displacement, traveling to South Korea and Japan to study issues of forced migration and human rights in North
Korea. She also obtained a grant from the Trans-Border Institute to photographically explore the social effects of international borders.
In 2007 Katie spent several months in a small community in Kenya where she documented the effects of internal displacement, made community visits, and worked with the youth club on an HIV/AIDS awareness project. In 2010 she volunteered in Thailand where she assisted in compiling case studies documenting human rights abuses against Burmese migrants in southern Thailand. Particular areas of interest in addition to displacement include transitional justice and youth advocacy. She has been with Friends of Africa International since 2007.
